If you really want to start over, you need to go to the title screen, press Up+Select+B and the game will ask you if you want to erase your saved data so you can start over again.
This is a child-proof lock Nintendo has been adding to its Pokémon games since Gen III IIRC (could be earlier) precisely to prevent the scenarios these bullshit stories are portraying. It's very, very hard for little kids to deduce they need to do this without looking at the instructions booklet if they really want to start a new game and overwrite the other one.
