Does anyone have a decent explanation why trainers don't get injured or killed as a result of their pokemon battling? Fire, earthquakes , etc?

I know its just fucking pokemon but what do you think?

Ok, I've controlled myself.

Anyway, I doubt trainers actually stand right behind their pokemon like you see; any miss would end horribly.

This brings me to another point though; how fricken tough are pokemon? Forget resistances, that thing just took an attack to the chest that would level a large building and it's barely even hurt

I think in league matches there are barriers built into the stadium like in the anime.

In random matches in the field or against gym leaders, either all pokemon can use protect on the trainer, or the trainers carry an item that makes a protect field around them like in the B2/W2 Trailer, unsure which of those that could have been.

These are just my headcanons though.

It is never been stated explicitly that real animals don't exist in the pokémon world, so that's the simplest explanation.

We never see other animals besides humans. This is because those animals' niches are filled by pokemon. It would be biologically impossible for earth animals to survive contending alongside the superior pokemon. No, instead chicken is grown using stemcells acquired from another galaxy where they have chickens.

No, what would be "ecologically impossible" would be any world where the base of the food chain consists of animals as big as even the smallest pokémon. Oceanic food-chain is inconceivable without zooplankton. Terrestrial flowering plant ecology needs small pollinators, etc. There is no way that pokémon could fill these roles unless there are pokémon less than 1/4 inch in length.

The Pokedex in games refers to real animals such as the Indian Elephant.

Pokemon don't replace the animals in the Pokemon world, but they do mimic animals and other forms of life.

Remember, Pokemon are Yōkai, monsters that simply co-exist with humans and normal animals.

Actually I believe in some episodes of the anime they talk about eating a magikarp. I believe it was one of the Rocket duo that dreams about it after getting swindled into buying the magikarp.
