>>13952848There aren't "over 600 fundamentally different character types" in Pokemon. There are 264 final-stage Pokemon, including Legendaries. All of these can be fit into a few categories, such as "Physical/Special Sweeper, Mixed Wall, Setup" et cetera, with a large amount of overlap. At the competitive level only the top 20% or so of these Pokemon will be used, because only a few can be good enough at a certain role on your team of six to warrant a position (while Dragonite and Starmie can both learn Thunderbolt and Ice Beam, Starmie would be preferable as a Boltbeam Special Sweeper because of its superior Speed and Dragonite being better suited to Physical moves).
There's a huge overlap in movepools as well, and many moves are just as outclassed as some Pokemon (why use Absorb when you have Giga Drain)
