Legendary archetypes:
Introduced in Gen 1:
Trios: Catchable before the E4 in their debut (but through convulted means) at levels 40-50, 580 BST. Birds, beasts, regis, lake, musketeers. Kami as well, but their roles are more similar to those of misc legends (those are absent in Gen 5).
Postgame: Catchable only after the E4 in their debut, located in the location with the higher leveled wild Pokemon in the game at level 70, ~680 BST, banned at the Battle Tower, Frontier and Subway. Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Giratina, Kyurem. The opposite version mascot had this role in Gen 2, and, since Rayquaza at Gen 3, those are the mascot of the third version and form a trio with the paired version mascots (but the paired mascots remain more similar to each other).
Introduced in Gen 2:
Mascots: Catchable usually after the 7th gym, often plot-mandatory and related to the climax of the evil team arc, fought at levels 40-50, ~680 BST, InfinityPlusOneSword. Lugia/Ho-Oh, Kyogre/Groudon, Dialga/Palkia, Reshiram/Zekrom, likely Xerneas/Yveltal. Lugia/Ho-Oh had heavy influences from the postgame archetype, and, since Kyogre/Groudon at Gen 3, they end up forming a trio with the Postgame legend, which becomes the mascot of the third version.
Introduced in Gen 3:
Misc legends: 600 BST as a general rule, lack of conformity to patterns, specially in Gen 4. Latios/Latias work as a duo, Cresselia is the closest to them in function and would have formed a pattern if Darkrai wasn't event-only. Heatran and specially Regigigas are similar to the postgame archetype specially in Diamond and Pearl, but not quite (mostly due to the fucking Tower Tycoon using them), and so they do not fit in any cathegory.
Introduced in Gen 4:
Cresselia, Heatran and Regigigas causing headaches.
Introduced in Gen 5:
The Kami Trio playing the role of misc legends, along with Landorus having the 600 BST to keep playing the patternbreaking game.
