Since Houou was seen during Episode 1 of the Pocket Monsters anime, was Houou originally planned by the developers during Gen-1 or was Houou and anime-original (filler) Pocket Monsters that the games just decided to use for the next generation?

If Houou was made during the Gen-1 era, then how many more of the Gen-2 Pocket Monsters do you think were actually made during the Gen-1 time period?

Generation 2 was in the works way before the anime. Actually a lot of Pokemon from G2 were going to be in G1 games but there were limitations.

Most (if not all) of Gen-2 Pokemon were actually made for Gen-1 but couldn't be put in due to time-constraints. There's a lot of really interesting articles about this out on the internet. One of the dominant theories about Missingno is that it is the leftover data of some of the removed Pokemon from the game that later were used for Gold ad Silver.

No. Someone asked Morimoto about this in an interview. He confirmed there were originally going to be 190 Pokemon for Red and Blue, but they decided to save some designs for later. When asked, he said Ho-Oh was not one of them.

He didn't say which, people just speculate about it. For example one of the unused cry entries in Red and Blue is extremely similar to Crobat's so some people assume he's one of them. I believe Murkrow is one as well.

Do keep in mind however that in modern Japanese, "ou" is just pronounced "oo", so it's pronounced Hoooo. The Ho-Oh spelling is a bit more accurate for English speakers, since Japanese romanization hasn't taken these changes into account.

Gold and Silver were postponed for a couple of years, during which I'd imagine quite a few designs for new Pokemon were made, probably including Ho-Oh.
Google "Gold and Silver beta", it's quite interesting as it has the RBY style graphically.

No. The first 4 gen 2 Pokemon to be revealed were Ho-oh, Slowking, Donphan and Ampharos, and they were revealed a good while before the anime debuted.

It's based on when each pokemon was programmed. Rhydon was first, kangaskhan second - this is why it will evolve into BOTH of these.

Also, there is absolutely no evidence of cubone being involved with the kangaskhan line in any way whatsoever... they don't even look remotely alike.

I wonder how much of Ho-Oh's design, as well as other Gen II's Pokemon, was influenced by Gamefreak anticipating the GBC. Most Gen I Pokemon have very simple pallets with around 3 major colors. Gen II is where we see Pokemon that begin to be more colorful. If Ho-oh was in gen I, I'd imagine it might have been all gold like the first episode of the animé.

In the same way, I imagine why Gen III's designs are the way they are, they're designed to take advantage of the GBA's graphic output.

Yes, that is definitively the case. That's also why modern pokémon are "overdesigned", they're simply more colorful and have more detail since modern hardware can handle it, the simple designs of gen 1 were due to gameboys shitty hardware limiting their potential

OP ho-oh in episode 1 was a drawing mistake. everyone knows that. the animators were asked to put articuno flying over the rainbow, they just drew it wrong. that's why later on the phone ash points to the articuno drawing saying it was the one flying over the rainbow. ho-oh was not one of the pokemon designed for gen-1 but taken out (>No.13971542) the only vague thing you could possibly try to infer is that that animation mistake later inspired early artwork for ho-oh

Presumably it has to do with it's status as the "Legendary" species, but any relations to what we know as "legendary Pokémon" were never expanded upon. If it means anything, which I have a suspicion it does, Japanese classifies what we call "legendary Pokémon" into two different subdivisions; Illusory and Mythical, the latter containing only the Shinno mascots. I suspect something may have gotten lost in the translation.

People need to realize that MissingNo. is not a Pokémon. It is not programmed into the game. MissingNo., M', and the others are what happens when you tell the game to pull up data that doesn't exist. Those empty index numbers are not empty, per se, but more like "skipped". There is literally nothing there at all.

First episode of Pokemon aired April 1, 1997, which is well after Gold and Silver were in development. The games were originally supposed to be released in 1998, and were only delayed because of Pokemon Stadium. That's why we got Yellow Version.

Ho-oh was already created as a Gen 2 Pokemon and was added to the anime. It was not a Gen 1 Pokemon nor was it a case of the anime influencing the games.

No they don't, that's Bulbapedo's incompetent "translators" making shit up.

There's "Legendary Pokemon" and "Mythical Pokemon", the former being the normal legendaries, and the latter being the event-only Pokemon. The "Mythical" term was introduced in Japan in gen 3, and NoA's translators/marketers finally picked up on it at the tail end of gen 4. Prior to that, English games and promo material had just called Mythical Pokemon "legendary".
