As far as anime goes Sinnoh was easily the best. Ash was so good they had to pull a trainer who used Ubers out of their ass just so him losing would make a little sense. Ash vs. Paul was my favorite battle in the anime, though, so I might be a little biased.

Ash, DAT Dawn, Brock not being as braindead as he was in Hoenn, DAT Cynthia, the league, Hunter J, Paul, Cyrus, Riley, fucking everything.

Sinnoh, Orange Islands, and MAYBE Johto if you don't mind the filler, are the only episodes worth watching.

X/Y appears promising though. Like a proper sequel to D/P.
