I'll acknowledge that Gen One was fun-- there's no doubt about that-- but if you take off the nostalgia goggles, there's just not that much to it. Even setting all the glitches and errors of the games, they just haven't held up that well as the years have gone by.
There's nothing to do in Kanto after you've beaten the Elite Four, with the exceptions of catching all the Pokemon and challenging the Elite Four again.
You can't re-challenge trainers you've already beat, your only source of income for items like potions and pokeballs is fighting the Elite Four, and once you've caught them all, what else is there to do?
Generation One was good, but it's certainly not the best.
Generation Two made a lot of needed improvements, and was more fun, in my opinion. Still, it was also lacking in some aspects.
Generation Three was actually pretty damn good, the only thing I dislike about it is all the fucking surfing that you had to do. There were plenty of good things to make up for that, though-- the introduction of abilities and natures, better multiplayer options, motherfuckin' secret bases, Pokemon contests... there was so much to do.
