I know that /vp/ hates it.. I mean, that's predictable as hell (almost as if they forget Magneton, Dugtrio and Dodrio every single time..), but I love the hell out of it.

It's very appropriate that it "just adds another", as that both works for swords, and the whole "single hand, single eye" design it had. Wasn't too crazy about it, but i'll be using it for sure now.

I really, really like Doublade (as I liked Honedge) - definitely going to be using one on my team. I really need to come up with a good nickname, though - I was considering using an old French noble family name, because it's based on a crest, but I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure it will, which is good. I had been thinking it would only be a two stage at best, but I think they are going with the theme.

It's also developing more of a base as well, instead of being a floating sword, now it's kind of a coat of arms that uses its two possessed swords.

The thing that gets me is not that the evolution is bland and uninspired (it is). No, what gets me is that THIS was what gamefreak decided to hype up and post. Not starter evos, not a new eveelution, not an evo for clauncher, helioptile, skrelp, etc; just two fucking swords.

That's a really stupid way of thinking. Contrary to what /vp/ may believe, Gamefreak isn't out to ruin your day. They aren't "punishing the fans" for making another Pokemon in this manner. That's just how some Pokemon work, and if "fans" can't accept and deal with the fact that a small number of Pokemon will evolve in this manner, then they really are some of the most fickle people imaginable. Most Pokemon that evolve this way play on themes that usually incorporate similar things. Also, it's Gamefreak not Nintendo.

So, biological speculation anyone?

I currently have a few:
1) Honedge and Doublade's spirits actually reside in the scabbards, and the swords are just extensions of the main body that they use for perception, self-defense and energy acquisition (like Wobbuffet). Thus when it evolves, it's only the scabbard that goes under significant change.
2) Doublade is the result of one Honedge winning a duel against another Honedge. The loser has their consciousness erased, with the victor assimilating the other one into itself; thus, it has the appearance of two Honedges, despite being a single poltergeist.
3) Symbiotic existence like the other multi-pokemon. Plain and simple (and boring).

Any other ideas?

I mostly entertained the idea because I can't figure out the spirit would even bother with the scabbard in the first place, since for Honedge it's more like a mask in functionality. It doesn't lose the scabbard on evolution either-- it becomes more intricate even.
But I could just be reading too far into things. Not everything has to be like Spoink or Klang.

I would have liked it more if the arms were attached to the sheathes, or something. I just don't like the idea of the swords having to hold of the sheathe so awkwardly. I know Honedge's didn't float, but it had a grip back then.

This. Plus, most people are only upset because it wasn't what they expected it to be, so then they call this uncreative. I myself had this natural knee jerk reaction for a little bit.

You have to put yourself in Gamefreak's shoes here. They can't please everyone, and this actually is an interesting design. They lose points for being a multiple pokemon design like they did before, but it's got a celtic claymore theme, plus a medieval knights symbol. To me this looks like a way to give it arms in a mid stage and begin a transition into having an actual body. Perhaps it will gain legs to explain why it does not have Levitate.
