It gives me the same error I get on my DSlite
Though it's not such a big deal since I'll get X/Y near launch and my 3DS can connect to the internet, so I'll finally have a Gengar.

That's really odd, I can do the same and all of my 5th gen games get online on the 3DS just fine. Try connecting with one of them on the 3DS and see what error code you get.

I've had friends and wi-fi, but my friends didn't play pokemon and my DS couldn't connect because of the security settings

He hasn't had a friend that also plays pokemon, and DS lites require a WEP encryption on your router. Most routers upgraded to WPA2 after finding a commonly exploited backdoor into WEP. DS lites can't connect to WPA/WPA2

It should just be using whatever connection your 3DS is using, what kind of security settings are you using?

If it's a flashcart you're likely out of luck there. Gen 6 games will still work, though.

There was a way in Gen 4 to get a the trade-in evolutions to work via glitch concerning the wi-fi connection.

That said, once I got a 3DS, I just traded between my old DS and 3DS with Platinum and Soul Silver.

Yeah, using the 3DS' connections is a DSi enhanced feature, which flashcarts don't emulate. If you had the actual cartridge (any 5th gen game will work), it would work, though. May be worth investing in if you want to bring your bros into the new gen.
