When people say this, they often say things like "this isn't even Pokemon anymore" disregarding the fact that the same theme was larglely present in the first generation of games. And then when you mention that it becomes "well it's okay for them because they were the first" even though that line of thinking doesn't make any sense. It doesn't suddenly make it not two of the same thing put together. I think that it thematically fits for some Pokemon to evolve in the manner, like magnets linking together, or dual wielding swords being a coat of arms. I believe people just sometimes don't want to take the time to think a little more about why a Pokemon is the way it is. That doesn't mean I'm saying you have to like it, but they should recognize it is not Gamefreak being out to get you, and instead just playing on similar themes they've always used for Pokemon in a different way.
