I don't understand why people bitch about Pokemon inspired by inanimate objects, when Pokemon comes from a culture that has a ton of creatures in their mythology that are either just possessed inanimate objects (Like Honedge and Doublade), or literally just inanimate objects that came to life.

in creating IO Pokemon, they're just drawing inspiration from their own cultural mythology.

I don't like the idea of things like a magnet or ice cream living out in the wild because I can't even think how shit like that is supposed to work in an ecosystem

I don't mind when there's an explanation behind it like Porygon being man made, and Honedge works because it isn't just a living sword, it's a sword being used by a ghost

The disparity stems from the misconception that Pokemon are "meant to be animals".

Pokemon were never animals; Pokemon are primarily inspired by Japanese yokai (including mythological creatures and ghost objects that become self-aware after 100 years) and things like sayings (Farfetch'd) and fictional popular culture concepts (like Mewtwo). They only started "replacing" animals in gen 3, when they started making shit like "whale Pokemon" simply because a whale Pokemon didn't exist yet. Pokemon were also meant to be rarer than they are in the narrative today.

the body is made from Ice, and the stuff on it's head is snow (it's actual head is under the snow and is made from Ice like the lower half of it's body)

Honedge isn't a sword being used by a ghost. it's a sword possessed by a ghost.
if you break out th ol' sylph scope, you won't see a dude standing there holding it. the spirit is inside the sword

the animals we consider normal would still exist, but the mythological stuff would also exist, just less common than normal animals.

that's how Pokemon was meant to be conceptually, but it just sort of evolved into something else, the Pokemon completely replacing animals in the world and becoming commonplace to their society.

that explains why in earlier Pokemon media, there wwere still references to real world animals like Elephants and fish.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

When it comes down to it, I think people forget what "Pokemon" means.
it means "Pocket MONSTERS" and a monster does not have to be an organic creature, as Japanese mythology shows.

I can't really think of any inanimate object monsters from any western mythology though

I don't dislike how the Pokemon franchise has grown, but I do think Gamefreak needed to plan more when they started replacing flora and fauna with Pokemon. For example, fossils used to be "Monster fossils", not actual animal fossils. Now we have stuff like a literal T-Rex which means our version of T-Rex never existed in the Pokemon world. It's fine, there are no real problems, but when it comes to world building and questions like "what do the people eat?" it sort of falls apart. Gamefreak have no answer so they just never address it. That's my only criticism of the Pokemon franchise.

And the didn't replace flora. There are plant pokemon, but not all pokemon are plants. I don't know where you even got that from.

Dullahans (ghost armour)
Pumpkins (or scarecrows)
Hairy Hands (hands which derail drivers)
Baba Yaga (walking house)

Hell play Persona 3 or 4 for a bit and most of the Shadows are inanimate objects from mythology

But you understand how eco-systems work, correct? Why is it appropriate to have real-world flora in addition to Pokemon flora, but not real-world animals in addition to Pokemon animals? I severely doubt Combee and Beedrill pollinate tiny little flowers they can't even fit into.

Well I don't hate gen 3 at all, but you can compare it. Look at Girafarig. They didn't go "oh we need a Giraffe Pokemon because there isn't one yet", it's based on the making "Kirin" into a palindrome, making the Pokemon itself a palindrome, and obviously making that Pokemon a Kirin. For Wailord? "What's the biggest Pokemon? Oh fuck we don't have a blue whale Pokemon yet let's do that". It's cool, but it has no reason to be there other than to "be the blue whale Pokemon".
