And no, the art styles may not necessarily be canon, they still have a high degree of selectivity and the artists wouldn't be allowed to fuck up that badly that consistently over a design.

The only conclusion is that the game sprites all have him at a purposely ambiguous angle to hide the fact of his protruding head from people who are unable to handle the truth.

His back sprite? Can't see it. Every front sprite? Same exact angle as the artwork.
