I like that it's not immediately obvious what he's based off of. He's vaguely dinosaurish because he's big and reptilian looking, he also has attributes of a frog, he's got cat looking ears, and a flower growing out his back. He's basically one of the most original looking Pokemon because it isn't immediately obvious what his real lifer counterpart is.

Charizard is a typical looking dragon and Blastoise is a giant mecha turtle, but Venusaur is just unique. Even it's Japanese name means "It's strange, isn't it?"

Also, I like flowers and grass types. On top of that, he made the first two gyms really easy for a babby playing the first Pokemon game.

You can easily find this stuff out by going on the chlorophyll bulbapedia page.

Its design is fucking 11/10: you know you don't want to make this motherfucker angry, but it's also perfectly chill and cuddleable when it isn't being provoked. It's also the most practical of the three: you could totally just travel on its back on a hot day sitting in the shade of its flower on a bed of comfy leaves just taking it easy as your bro tirelessly marches forward. Happen to be traveling through an industrial area? No problem: the smell won't bother you when this guy gives you some of its Sweet Scent. Because I love Bulbasaur and I'm forced to eventually use this if I want to progress with the game while still using my very first pokemon. It still holds some of Bulbasuars coolness, but it loses some of the charm along the way.

Venusaur = 6'07" - great to ride, Charizard is a pathetic 5'07 (considering that it's a bipedal dragon thing)

Well the Bulbasaur evolution line is what caught my attention about Pokémon in the first place. When Pokémon was only out in Japan we had a Japanese student visit us, she had gifts for me and my siblings one of which being a Bulbasaur plush toy. When Pokémon was first being promoted the first thing to grab my attention was Bulbasaur.

On topic, it has sleep powder and leech seed, both really early in gen 3 and beyond and it's reasonably fast and powerful, even before you start getting into its incredible usefulness competitively
