The only thing that could've saved Charizard was ret-conning the Flying Typing to Dragon Type when he underwent Mega Evolution.
But naw, they took the easy way out.
"HEY GUYS, WE COULDN'T HELP BUT NOTICE HOW QUICKLY NINETALES' POPULARITY ROSE W/ DROUGHT, SO WE DID THE SAME THING W/ CHARIZARD!"
The funny thing is, that pure Fire Typing is a blessing to Ninetales, while that additional Flying Type doesn't benefit Charizard at all.
