Hoenn is just about the most diverse region, climate wise, town wise, and pokemon wise (aside from encounter rate/location). All of the cities have their own feeling, look, design, and "gimmick" if you will - foretree is a huge forest with tree hut houses, sootopolis is designed like Crete and in the caldera of a volcano, you have actual volcano cities, underwater routes and caves, a ghost-mountain, deserts, beach towns, caves with alternating water levels, etc. etc.
If there's one region that didn't deserve any of the remakes it was Kanto, and that's because it's the most boring region. Every town is the same, all the land is the same (either grass, caves, or some water) and nothing about it stands out.
