All I see in that image is the trainer drawing plastered over an entirely separate 3d background.

I really hope they gave all the trainers 3d models and animations and the images are just the intro.

After seeing the demo with the rival battles, it's still strange because of the official artwork and shadow on the OP pic isn't shown in the battles played on the demo.

The text in the Youngster pic says "X got P240 for winning!", so it's post-battle I'm afraid. Looks like only important NPCs get in-battle models.

I don't think there will be a model of non rival/very important/team flare trainers, that's why they are using images for those, the ball will come out of nowhere like in stadium.

Full 3D gym leaders and trainers will be a feature in Z
