I'm not sure if that counts, but I feel like it doesn't. In which case, I think HootHoot was the only one I've used past the second gym in any given game.

I generally don't like filling my team up with early routes trash since 4 times out of 5 it's not worth it. Sure, the ranch thing last gen was amazing and Gen 6 might improve this aspect, but I still never use normal earlymon and regional birds (including Staraptor).

I usually use the other bird offered. Spearow instead of the Pidgey line. Xatu in GSC, Wingul in RSE, I used a Drifblim as my flier in DP, a Sigilyph in BW, and a Swanna in B2W2

I used Golbat/Crobat to fly in the first three games.

I used Drifblim to fly in Gen IV.

I used Golurk to fly in Gen V.

I've never needed the birds.

For a purpose such as Fly or Surf.

You're required to have a Surf Pokemon in most of the games, so you'll NEED a Pokemon to do that.

Fly isn't required but is highly preferred, so you'll NEED a flyer to do that.

I actually did this up until gen 5 (except Noctowl). But after using Unfezant, I was completely horrified at how lacklustre it was. I ended up boxing it as soon as I caught an alternative. That alternative was Zekrom, although I didn't use him for battling.

Talonflame looks like it will be Staraptor/Swellow-tier though. If my free Torchic has a nature and IVs worth EV training, I may actually give Talonflame a go.
