In Magic, they cycle out old sets to force the metagame to consistently change. They also have a "Modern" format where all cards from before the redesign are banned because the game was so drastically different back then.

For perspective, the Legacy format (all cards allowed) is (was?) infamous for rarely lasting beyond a single turn. In Modern and Standard, the game rarely ends before turn 5 and usually extends significantly beyond that.

Point is, they do it so the game isn't horrible, and also as an excuse to make you buy new shit if you're really invested in the game.

thats gay because i used to play yugioh alot and almost all old cards are basically unusable ever since synchs came out its dumb because i love blue eyes and red eyes even tho dragon decks will never be good ever

In Yugioh that happened because of power creep. They kept making stronger and stronger cards to try and be more impressive.
In Magic, they actually looked at the game they had thrown together at some point and went "Wow, this game is fucking awful right now, let's start over from scratch and try not to make everything horrible this time." It would be like if in the next big Yugioh release they decided "Wow, synch monsters ruined the game entirely, let's lock them in their own format and start making a new, healthier format where they don't exist at all."

Whether they succeeded or not is up to interpretation, though.

From what I heard, it has both problems. Every deck seems to be built around powerful EX Pokemon and others that have useful PKMN Powers, which means that Charizard would be remarkably underwhelming. It also has a much wider version of Magic's set rotation formats, meaning that your Charizard card wouldn't be legal anyway.

If by archetypes then that would be true, but plenty of old individual cards have had lots of staying power over the years due to the changing metagame where old cards with obscure weird effects may suddenly become really beneficial. Super Rejuvenation for example suddenly became good enough to be banned when the metagame started focusing on those Dragons.
