Has it been ten years? Fifteen? It seems like a lifetime, the kind of peak that never comes again. Pokemon in the late nineties was a very special time and place to be a part of. But no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time in the world. Whatever it meant.

It really was a time of wonder and discovery, people write it off as being dumb, kids over thinking things, but weren't we just exploring the depths of the Pokemon world. There really isn't exploration like that anymore, with cheat codes and walkthrough coming out in the first five seconds of a game being out there's no mystique. Everything you'll ever need to know about the game will be laid out, any rumors will be denied or confirmed by company's without hesitation.

There'll never be things like Pikablu, where even officials didn't know, where everyone was speculating, wondering what new pokemon could be on the horizon or hidden in that tiny cartridge. Was something great to experience.

Those days in the wait between Gen I and II were something magical. Nowadays everything has an air of familiarity. But back then there was this aura of excitement and mystery that I just can't find comparable in newer Gens' reveals, no matter how much I end up liking them. The slow, long wait between the games just made the anticipation all the better. Those 347 days of silence must have been agonizing for Japanese fans.

Also, pretty much any early Gen II reveal Pokemon is memorable to me. Even Snubbul and Ledyba have a special place in my heart.

Even if all the rumors were silly and ridiculous, I at least attempted all of them, because in my mind it worked. There had to be a secret, they had to have hidden him somewhere.

It was that level of childish innocence and doggedness that made that era.

I mean, on one hand, this generation having a worldwide release does create something different. We're not going to have this gap of Japanese people getting the games and having the entire thing leaked and ruined beforehand. This will be the first gen in a long time that most people will be going into completely blind.

And while that is problematic in the sense that we're all used to forming teams ahead of time now, it's the closest thing we're going to get to the feeling of Gen 1 & Gen 2 where it was like OH GOD, WHAT IS THIS? and not having seen it beforehand.

The fact the Pokemon are all 3D will also add a bit as well. While we've had 3D Pokemon games before, it's never been wild Pokemon in the grass. Every encounter will be anticipation for either a new Pokemon or the excitement of seeing an old Pokemon in 3D.

We also know nothing about the actual story of the game (assuming you care).

So there's still elements of wonderment, but not necessarily/exactly the same.

I still think that the 3D wild Pokemon, Mega Forms (pfft, evolutions) and not knowing all the new Pokemon beforehand will add a sense of wonder to the game vaguely comparable to the original feels.

The new Pokemon hit me in new ways that are different than what it did then, that's just how things are, grow up and know as much as you do, have a more jaded sense of reasoning, if I was as jaded then as I am now, all the mew/pikablu/mewthree stories wouldn't have had nearly as much of an impact because I'd have written them all off anyways.

I'd like nothing better from X and Y to give me a fraction of what I used to feel. I feel like that's what's missing in the prior Pokemon, just feels like the element of exploration got lost somewhere.

Although admittedly children are definitely more exposed to information than we used to be during gen 1, I still think the majority of children playing the game don't even think to look on the Internet to find out information like we do, which is a good thing.

With a worldwide release, however, the amount of information being leaked is extremely little which I for one am SO happy about. I'm excited that I have absolutely no idea what to expect out of this generation and I'm going to love playing every second of it once it's finally released.

One of my most potent memories from Gen 1 is when I called an official Pokemon hotline and a recording voice starting off the call by telling me there was no such Pokemon as "Pikablu" or "Luigi".

Oh, I know. I was just giving input on my feelings in regards to the general excitement of a new generation.

I was excited for Gen 3, 4 & 5, but it definitely wasn't the same. I still find the whole 'fake leaks' thing exciting, since you never know what is real and what isn't, but it's much easier to pass off everything as fake (or see that things are fake, as you get less gullible from seeing fakes for so many years).

Gen 6 is a bit more exciting to me than previous gens due to how little we really know and the whole "everything's 3D now" aspect. And customization.

It's also the first gen in a while that I've genuinely liked (or felt indifferent) most Pokemon as soon as they were revealed, instead of going OH GOD NO at them and then liking them later on. I don't love *all* of them, but I mean, I haven't been necessarily disappointed or anything.

Let's be realistic. Most of us were kids back when Gen 1 and 2 came on the scene. Most of us are now adults for Gen 6.

Of course the magic and wonderment of your youth isn't going to be replicated for these new generations of games. You'll be interested in them, sure, but you'll never have that young kid mentality that makes every new release a-freaking-mazing.

It's a little bit sad, but it's all part of growing up.

With leaks, walkthroughs and things of that nature just a click away, kids don't have to go around looking for a Pikablu to see if it actually exist, nor would there be delay in information making us not know what Pikablu is either. Like the whole Marill/Pikablu fiasco started with a leak at a gamer con, with technology now a days we'd know what was going on at that con years before the con even happened.

Yeah, I grew up and nothing's ever gonna make me feel like that again, but the situations that brought these things to pass aren't the same either and I don't think anything will ever reach a plateau like that ever again.

Yeah, stuff like Gamefaqs really prevents people from finding stuff out on their own. You always have that temptation to cheat and read a walkthrough if you get stuck. It's a bit like TV shows - you'll get spoilered on the internet if you don't watch them instantly. Which is sad, but it's the modern world I guess.

I must admit, I do love the drip-drip of info and all the speculation that comes with that. It's nearly impossible to blind-play a pokemon game nowadays though unless you block the internet.

You know what else I noticed? For the first time in SO long, I, and many other of my friends, have sat around a table at restaurants, over playing Brawl, etc.. genuinely and excitedly discussing the starter Pokemon, wondering what they might be. Feels just like Ash way back when he couldn't pick.

I gotta say, I love the feeling of all coming to a decision to each pick a different starter.
And you know what? I think, regardless of what they become, the pride of having whichever one chosen as your starter will shine through, and you'll stick with it.

It's because it's a glitch to override shit, not an actual programmed cheat (and the "cheat" people pass around is just an overly specific way of getting the exact right values in place, not things that actually relate to the glitch itself)
