The saves that matter (so far ACNL, most likely Pokemon too) can't be backed up with the digital copy, and consider that it is much more likely it is to corrupt your save file with mishaps on system transfer or SD cards (some partially by carelessly tinkering with it, some just bad luck).

Before it was easy because it was between two consoles designed to communicate with one another (GBA and DS through the GBA port, and all the DS games since they were DS game->DS Game) Even if they were to remove the online component it would still require an app to move the pokemon over because it's the 3DS reading the old BW cart and then converting the info to the new (assumedly more secure) format. It just seemed like a good time to implement the online storage.

It would be make much more sense, from a user's perspective, to transfer pokemon to a 3ds app and then to the 3ds cart than to transfer them to Nintendo and then from nintendo

i'll just transfer all my 31IV perfect pokegened mon's to my Y copy and Nintendo can't do anytthing because they are all legit. with some knowledge you can make a legit pokemon using pokegen, and nintendo really cant tell the difference cause pokemons are a bunch o data, if the data matches..

Nintendo knows there are easy hacking programs out there, but still wants the people that have had their mons since Gen III & IV to be able to keep them. The free period in January makes it possible for a one time transfer of all those pokemon for free for all the loyal players that bought the game. After that, those who want to hack a new team in Pokegen on Gen V games and/or pirate XY (this is being generous on timeframe) will then have to pay $5 to transfer them in. It also makes it possible for them to shut down transfer access at any time or block any clones of Pokemon they know to be hacked (don't be surprised if FakeGTS Pokemon are blocked) actively.

How many boxes do we get in Gen VI? 6? 8? I know it's less than BW (and BW features 16 boxes, iirc).
