After Groudon helped make the E4 easy in Ruby, I gave up using legendaries, and in general, I'd say things are more fun. I love taking on the E4 with underleveled pokemon and barely squeaking through. However, in White, my team seems really weak, but that might just be due to it being a more difficult game.

the memory of my first team is fuzzy, because I mostly just used my starter. i know for sure I had a typhlosion named blaze, a shiny tangela (no nickname), and an ampharos.
fav gen is always hard. since my fav game atm is leafgreen, I guess I'll go with gen3

The only legendary I ever raised was Articuno. I didn't even care for it and I don't even remember how I came around to training him but he became my bro and has a special place in my heart now.

I replayed it multiple times so the team I had is fuzzy. I know I had a jolteon and maybe blastoise. Could have been charizard. Mewtwo at the end. Probably had one of the legendary birds

Honestly cannot remember, because I replayed Pokemon so many times. I would restart the second I beat the elite four

I can remember having a team of just Pidgeot, Venusaur, and Butterfree. I also remember beating the game with just Butterfree and Venomoth before as well

I had the Pokemon Handbook when I was a kid (you know, that cartoony pseudo-Pokedex book that was just abunch of info about all 151 'mons and a bunch of Professor Oak tips)

One of the "tips" that was repeated over and over was "MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BALANCED TEAM OF POKEMON! IF YOU HAVE TOO MANY OF ONE TYPE THEN YOU'RE SURE TO LOOSE AGAINST STRONG GYM LEADERS!" and shit like that. I took that to heart as a kid (because Professor Oak told me to!) and made sure I had all Pokemon of different Types.

Nowadays I just play with my favourites without caring about balance. In Diamond I had 2 Fighting types and 3 Dark types.
