Alakazam can't use the punches in Gen 1, unless you trade over from Gen 2 which isn't allowed in 99% of Gen 1 matches.

I'd say its typing is a pretty decent factor in why its OP, with it having no viable weaknesses, but yeah its stats and movepool are the biggest factors.

It's not overhauls faggot, it's them innovating the series. They were going to stop at Gen 2 but kept going because of popularity, then Gen 3 added new shit. Every gen is meant to improve on the last one.

Don't need to. I've played through RBY several times, have beaten Stadium 1 twice or thrice, and I used to play RBY competitively on simulators. Stat up moves work just fine except for Focus Energy.

The actual core mechanics of battling haven't changed much since gen 3 (even gen 2 wasn't that far off what we have now). And you have to remember that Pokemon was more about trading and collecting back then, Game Freak didn't really give two shits about competitive battling until about gen 4.

There weren't really any good ways to deal with Chansey in gen 1. The best physical attackers around were stuff like Tauros, Snorlax, Aerodactyl, Gyarados and Golem, and even then there just wasn't a movepool to deal with something with that much HP, the only high BP physical moves were hyperbeam, EQ and explosion. Even STAB EQ from a Golem wouldn't kill a chansey reliably. IIRC a big part of the metagame was trying to blow up your enemy's chansey with an explosion from a Golem.

In addition to species clause, one of the things that kept Gengar in OU was the fact that you could switch him into an explosion, so until they killed your gengar they couldn't safely explode with golem. Of course he had no other ghosts competing with him at the time.

Then you weren't careful enough during your playing I guess, because I've tested and confirmed it several times on my Yellow cart, with different stat-up moves.

I can't fathom how no one has ever written anything about this anywhere, when the game is so popular. Every glitch pokemon available in these games is known. Every move they learn. Everything, literally - but such a basic thing isn't. Probably because people, just like you now, can't believe millions of people would miss this.

There were certain things that were bugged with stat lowering moves (like stringshot raises the attack of what it hits), and I think the infographic has it, but when you stat up too high it would come back around and give you retardedly low stats. But it wouldn't raise the wrong stats.

This is wrong. They would frequently host competitive tournaments and even made three whole spin-offs dedicated to just competitive battling. Crystal and onwards had competitive battling facilities like Battle Tower. Dark and Steel types exist solely to balance out the Psychic type and to buff the Fighting type. Why would they bother if they didn't give a shit about competitive battling?

Battling has been there since day one. They held official tournaments and shit. GF probably started focusing more on battles during gen IV because all the changes made way for more pokemon to be viable battlers, so you didn't have to have the same cookie-cutter team if you wanted to win anything, or so they thought.

Shit, go watch Werster or something, he's probably the single most knowledgeable guy when it comes to gen 1 mechanics and he uses X items in ALL of his Blue/Yellow runs. And they ALWAYS raise the intended stat. And they're not mechanically different from stat up moves.

I'm sorry, but you're just incredibly wrong, it's not like I have a bone to pick, or I'm zealously defending the first gen, but you're either not telling the truth, have done an error in your analysis, or have a one of a kind glitched cart.

I couldn't believe my eyes! So i repeated the test. It happened again. And then with other stat-up moves. Same thing. And this was after 10+ years of playing R/B/Y. So I didn't notice it earlier either.

To settle this once and for all:

The guy is half right. In-game battles for Gen 1, the boosts you get from badges are re-applied every time you are effected by a stat changing move, so you get boosts to all your stats. This applies ONLY to in-game battles and not link cable battles, though, as badge boosts don't apply there.

Shit nigga, tested it out myself. Kingler outsped several Golbat after three Swords Dances I guess you were right after all. Apologies.

According to Bulbapedo, the badge boosts are ignored if you get a crit, which would explain why I never noticed it in-game. Kingler was the first time I used a stat up move in-game in years, his speed is shit so I would have needed max boosts to notice the effect, and Crabhammer always crits so the badge boosts would never applied on the special end. Dayum.

As for why it was never noticed, it's probably because a) It's probably not something you can gather by just looking at the coding, since apparently RBY's coding is a fucking mess and b) hardly any one uses stat moves anyway since the game's so damn easy to steamroll to begin with.

Yeah, but wouldn't you think at least some people would notice? Long ago I've read a lot of these R/B/Y glitch websites. They were impressive. Every glitch Pokemon was listed, what it learns, how to find it, what's it going to do to your game, etc. Sometimes with a lot of detail.

But this basic mechanic wasn't noticed until after a random person from 4chan made a mention of it 15 years after the game was created?

Glitch Pokemon wouldn't be too hard to find if you had access to the game's coding. You would just need to look into where all the pokemon are kept, once you find that location you'll learn all the relevant details about the Pokemon. From then it's just a matter of hacking it into your game and seeing what damage it does to it. Plus, shit like Missingno and Glitch City were really popular so that probably inspired people to go looking into this stuff.

On the other hand, it sounds like this badge thing was a glitch and thus probably wasn't that easy to find in the coding. Combine this with the fact that no one cares about stat moves in-game, there probably wasn't much examination into it...though I'm betting some failed Nuzlocke challengers are wishing they knew about this right now. Give a bulky Pokemon Double Team, stock up on some potions, and then you're basically unbeatable.

I honestly wish they kept the "Hyper Beam doesn't have to recharge if it gets a kill" thing. It would have added a unique mechanic to the Hyper Beam-type moves (Blast Burn, Giga Impact, etc.) and made them completely viable as finishing moves to use when you're SURE you can get the kill.
