Being the third Fire/Fucking/Fighting in a row was very easy to get over because of how different he is than Blaziken and Infernape:
-HP made for recoil, not for bulk. And just because his D's are bad doesn't mean he can't take a hit, especially for a type that's weak to Surfquake.
-Fuckhuge attack and unreleased Reckless to boost those moves for nearly unresisted bludgeoning. Not to mention Bandboar, holy shit
-Speed just shitty enough to be able to effectively run Flame Charge OR to appeal to Trick Room teams. Can any other fire Starter boast that?
TLDR; The Unova starters are by no means the best, but they aren't the worst either. Just extremely average
