For me it was only 'me' and the partner due to how it takes a lifetime to grind xp and gummis, so anyone that wasn't me or the partner was complete deadweight and caused me to turn off their item user IQ to save reviver seeds. I found myself using a far bigger variety in Gates in spite of the reduced pokemon count due to no IQ system/leveling at base. If you found the gameplay itself enjoyable enough to grind recruited pokemon up to standard, then this obviously holds no weight.
I won't defend the one mission at a time though, since it was satisfying as hell to haul in three at once, or the text speed or worse still, the incredibly parroting nature of the dialogue.
Now if only the 6th gen PMD would cut the bad points of both Explorers and Gates, that'd be a game really worth getting
