No. I researched this for a while, and the absolute best I was able to do was use the Union Room in Gen 3 to trade with a friend online, but it failed like 10 times, so I think it working was a bit of a fluke.

Nintendo designed this shit to work on very specific hardware and cables. Don't expect any easy online trading or battling.
