Not a genwunner, but this character-driven format works best with the first two gens, although it would be neat with 3 and 4 as well, even if they'd end up being quite similar. And 5th gen would have the problem of it being two parallel stories that are the same yet with quite important differences, and no third version.
By the way, Gold, not Ethan. Gold and Silver being rivals makes far more sense than Ethan and Silver being rivals. I have no problems with the character design, but it clashes when the rest of the important characters are named after the versions. And the opposite gender childhood friend felt out of place in HGSS, as bad of a rival May/Brendan or as unconsequential Dawn/Lucas were, they felt fine and not just tacked on.
