I don't understand, are all the trainers in the regular Pokemon anime just really weak? Or the E4 of that animeverse just really overpowered. Because no one can stand up to the E4 in the regular Anime, and Ash just can't win a regular league.

Whereas Red and Blue become champions in the special at ages where people can only dream of in the regular long running anime

Ash is stuck in a never-ending series of 23 min commercials that tries to hide it by giving characters "stories".

They need to keep him around, that's why he'll never succeed. Though I don't really see the appeal of the regular anime.

seriously, The Origin is a fun ride, but it's nothing special. The fact that every single one of Red's victories comes down to the same fucking Pokemon overcoming odds against its favor due to the power of determination and "trust in your partner" proves it's not the smarter alternative to the main anime everyone was so fucking certain it would be.

His victory over Green isn't won through cleverness, it's won because Charizard musters the strength to persevere... which is how every god damn shounen series has its heroes win. The Mewtwo fight is the exact same situation, just with a Mega Evolution tacked onto the end of it.

There's nothing separating Red's generic characterization from Ash's generic characterization beyond the fact that they let him win, and they chose to shill Red's Charizard instead of Ash's Pikachu.

The thing is, at least Red accomplishes what he sets out to do. He feels successful trainer. I don't think anyone can say Ash feels accomplished, he can win something decent...but then it's quickly erased when he loses to some also-ran. In short, the character we are watching in the main anime is nothing but a failure.

The only development he gets is at the start when he gets a basic crash course in not being a total moron. And even then, that message is undermined by having Charizard repeatedly win every dramatic battle against something he has a disadvantage against.

The only difference there is, instead of coming up with some bullshit like using sprinklers to make Onix suddenly vulnerable to electricity, they fall back on "wow, Charizard dug deep enough at the LAST POSSIBLE FUCKING MOMENT to come from behind"

he doesn't develop at all. He's "every shounen protagonist ever" from start to finish.

There is a difference. The main anime is all about the journeying a meeting friends. The special was for the older audience as a recall to their days playing the game.

Red only won because his story had a beginning and end planned. He doesn't transform or learn anything after meeting Brock, and his only loss after that point exists to set up the drama of his fight later on with Giovanni.

This isn't better writing. This is the SAME writing just he wins at the end.

If all you care about is the fact that the protagonist wins a fucking championship, then your own priorities aren't much better than the writers' are.

First Giovanni fight - Gets knocked out in one hit, completely whipped.
Second Giovanni fight - Was bullshit.
Blastoise - That was bullshit.
Mewtwo - Gets whipped and needs a Mega to win

So we have 3 whipped and 2 op. The only one where he was truly op was the Blastoise fight when he hit him with a fire attack and knocked out all his HP.
The Charizard itself is hardly op.

Nope, but winning one of them would force the writers to always have him in second or third instead of the top 8 or 16 unless they want to make it look like dumb luck. Not to mention making him too good would alienate new kids to the series.

Overall their current strategy is the one you'd want to go with a show intended for 10 year olds.

he's overpowered because he wins despite nearly being down and out EVERY SINGLE TIME. In fact, the first fight doesn't even claim he needs the assistance of other Pokemon because Nidoran's more strategic application ultimately isn't enough, and it all comes down to Charmander digging just deep enough to make that last Scratch count

Mega Evolution is the same thing, just with a generic shounen power up in place.

The whole point of the special was how empathetic Red is towards Pokemon, which "coincidentally" is what megas are related to in the games. It's why they wasted 20 minutes adapting the Pokemon Tower shit, to show how selfless he is.

Charizard killing Blastoise wasn't OP.

They were following Gen 1 mechanics at that point.

Red just cheesed the fucking win.

He spammed Fire Spin and kept Blastoise from being able to do anything until he could KO Blastoise.

The whole ordeal had taken a significant effect on him beyond switch off his Electric attacks. Watch the actual episode. He starts losing his breath during the battle and by the end of the whole thing Ash has to start physically carrying him.

I have never once in my life said that him losing to Cameron wasn't stupid. I thought we were talking about stuff that happened right at the start of their respective journeys.

But to be honest, Ash losing fights against characters later in the season, against characters that have a full "season" under their belts at that point, or against other main characters and gym leaders? That's not really an issue.

Cameron beating him is stupid because he's pants on head idiotic.

Being well traveled doesn't automatically make one an MVP. Some people play their entire careers and never win championships. In fact, that's one of the few things about Ash's character that's reasonably realistic.

These aren't RPG characters who get "experience" and "level up". Pikachu has a lot of power he can call on when it's dramatic, but that's after thoroughly getting smacked around first or because of a plot device like in the Meloetta arc.

In fact, Red's efforts to fight strategically in most cases prove ultimately futile, as shown in the Giovanni and 2nd Green fight. The Pokemon he has with an advantage is always taken out by the thing it should rightly win against so Charizard can be set up to save the day.

Yeah, after Brandon gimped himself to make it remotely fair. If you want to bring up an actual accolade, a better one would be Drake in the Orange Islands. Ash was the first person to ever beat him during his championship reign (with it being said most people lost against his first Pokemon, Ditto), and it technically remains the only league he has ever won.

Ash has fought more trainers in more unique battles with more types and species of Pokemon participating, has fought more gym leaders and been a part of more competitions, while also having more friends giving him advice on every aspect of Pokemon from training to proper feeding to research.

Red didn't have any of that, either. Ash is the better trainer. He got first place in a league once. Ash has more trophies and medals on his wall than Red does a thousand times over.
