oh boy did gamefreak strike gold with this mega evolution shit.
they probably take up a dex #. gamefreak considers them a "new" pokemon. literally all they have to do to fill out half a dex is just slightly alter a pre-existing design (pic related) and poof. "new" pokemon.
You only need to design 70 or so actual new pokemon from scratch to make it a proper gen now that we have mega-evos. and you know what? most people are casuals and are fine with it. and not only are they fine with it, they LOVE it. that's why GF gives only the plebiest, most popular pokemon mega-evos. "Mega-charizard is le epic, mega ampharos is le fabulous XD, look at all the le epic cannons on blastoise." why bother designing new pokemon when you can just suck off some moron's nostalgiadick and slightly alter an already existing one?
remember how Gen IV had like 10 new designs, and 90 designs that were just evolutions from past gen? well, say hello to that structure FOREVER because mega-evos aren't going away. they're a fucking cash cow. say hello to 20 different versions of charizard. genwunners don't give a shit as long as their precious charizard gets more favoritism. same with any other really popular pokemon. that's the new thing. unnecessarily and excessively expanding new pokemon without giving much thought to new ones. If a new one becomes popular...then it's profitable. otherwise, it's just thrown into the trash.
I fucking hate mega-evolutions. not only do 90% of them look like shit, but the concept is toxic to the series. it isn't an addition, it's a detraction to the rest of the game. It may be cliche to say, but if you like mega-evolutions...you ARE the cancer killing pokemon.
