I don't know. It's pretty easy to gauge worldwide fan reactions and create a whole new form in a matter of a month and then introduce it into the games a few weeks before they come out - so it was probably due to the thunderous outrage of all of the fandom at once.

I'll be interested to see how this effects shiny Charizard, who is already black.

I don't understand why they'd do a complete color scheme change, though. It seems unusual and out of place, given the only other multiple-Mega Pokemon we know of - Mewtwo - has basically the same colors in both forms.

Mega Charizard X has better defense against Rock type attacks but unless you can recall a Mega Evolution without it reverting back it will never get to witness Stealth Rock because it would hit Charizard before the option to Mega Evolve is available.
