-Massive amount of changes and new shit being pushed, seemed so fucking revolutionary back then... New elements, genders, night/day, breeding, shinies, telephone calls, that trainer house things, etc.

-Still has the best music of all generations, I LOVED the champ theme, i can't even think of any other theme that gives a bitter "final boss" feeling than the lance/red champ theme... legendary dog theme was god tier as well, i still remember fighting the dog for the first time and staying in battle forever because i didn't want the theme to end, loved the remixed kanto leader theme too
Probably only criticism was that it was incredibly easy with the level gap in the second region, and that the starters were the shittiest of all generations
Can't even describe how glad I was that they remade it for HeartGold/SoulSilver
