I really liked it, but the battles were definitely the highlight and they were way too short.

It's probably bad if you're unable to look at this series thinking it's not supposed to be COMPETITIVE BATTLING: the animation. Pretty good if you going into it expecting to see what is basically Red's adventure.

Personally speaking, I think they did a pretty good job with the writing. Sure, it skips a lot and jumps around all the time, but they managed to make Red remind me of my myself when I was just a kid discovering what Pokemon was about. No Internet, no stuff like that, I'm sure everyone around here who was younger back when Gen One came out will probably grin at quite a few scenes, and think "hah, that's so obvious/small, but I sure acted this way back then too...".

Animation-wise it's also pretty good, though ep2 and 3 do look fairly weaker than ep1 and 4. The action cuts totally deliver, though, and there's some great looking stuff throughout it. The visuals in general are pretty solid, and I'm really happy with the character designs -- particularly for the Pokemon. It fixes the main series' biggest issue.

Also, music is top notch. Tons of great arrangements from Gen I music. Hard not to get pumped by those. So, all in all, I rather liked it, and I think it's great unless you're going in thinking it's going to be some sort of competitive battling madness where Red is a genius tactician with his Pokemon or whatever.

I really liked those little details, and to be honest it kinda made the whole special for me. Considering their goal with this was definitely 'pandering' (silly word) to people like us, they hit a jackpot. I imagine the ending bit is certain to move a few more copies of X/Y to people who feel like getting back to the series.

Overall it was pretty cool and a blast to watch, but I wish it was given a few more episodes so it didn't have to skip by so much. The mega stone plotline being shoehorned in also felt kind of odd. Besides that, it was good. Definitely a fun watch.

See, HP bars is the game's way of telling us how well our Pokemon is doing, because we need to know these things as players. Just showing the Pokemon looking woozy wouldn't be enough, because we need specifics with a game that has this much number crunching. With an animated adaptation though? Showing us the Pokemon's physical state over an HP bar is preferred, and when you're showing both, then the HP bar becomes completely superfluous and almost distracting.

I mean, if it was such an accurate adaptation, why did a Rhyhorn OHKO a Jolteon with T-Bolt?

I know, but it isn't meant to be helpful or anything. It's a stylistic reference to the games, just like the save at the end.

I guess it's a love it or hate it kind of thing. I can see why people might not like seeing it, for the reasons you stated, but since it's based off of the game you have to at least understand why it was there.

Again, this is a special made to appeal a general audience who might've played the originals, not the Smogon crew who takes battling very seriously. It's not supposed to be Smogon Battling: The Animation, so stuff like the Jolteon getting KO'd and the evolution are just... why get pissed over those instead of enjoying what it does right?

It was a marketing choice, and a damn good one. I don't even really care, I just want to see the major story elements in all their potential glory. My ultimate hope for this is that it will recieve a couple little additions, embellishments of the parts that were skipped over. Maybe even Red vs. Gold atop Mt. Silver.

I don't understand why people are so butthurt over Charizard, it sucks as a meta game Pokemon (and he's my favorite starter) but the special was clearly a glorified advertisement for Charizard's new mega form.

It was OKAY, but I do agree with the sentiment that making such a short special over such vast material is pretty useless, it needs to be remade into at least a 11-20 episode series. Till this day the best adaptation of the series remains to be the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga done by that hentai artist.

Makes sense really, it was only a fucking 1 hour long special, nowhere near enough time to talk on all subjects, hell in an hour I think you're at Vermillion City at best playing the actual game.

If they were really serious about it it would have been a series like they tried to do with Chronicles, it being a special pretty much sealed it's doom.

I enjoyed Origins greatly. Pokemon Blue was my first Pkmn game, and these episodes brought me back to a happy time in my life. I personally enjoyed it the most out of any Pokemon animation, because it makes sense to me.

I've never literally been cheering during a Pokemon anime before today, and it's nice to actually see Red speak. Sure, there's a lot more they could've done, and I'd like to see a full series like this that covers the events of the game, for each generation.

If you didn't enjoy it, oh well. I now remember why I've been with Pokemon since day one.
