Jet Alone has thinner limbs, more room to move those limbs and is anatomically more realistic, Chesnaught looks like an inflatable toy that can barely move without falling over.

You pretty much nailed it. The point of the website is to approach webcomics as sort of a dialogue between the author and the readers. (This was literally the case with the first story, Jailbreak.) But during Problem Sleuth and onward, the fanbase grew exponentially so that communicating with the fans became very different. He's doing sort of a balancing act in terms of story direction.
And the comic has always had a semi-sarcastic semi-genuine tone to it, so things like the fandom-mocking characters can be taken at face value or be seen just as jokes on the fans.
Basically anyone looking into Homestuck should read Problem Sleuth or any of Hussie's other work first because HS is a clusterfuck.
