If any of you scrubs could understand the dialog, you'd know that Giovanni's Pokémon severely out leveled Red's.

Look at what Red was doing the entire damn special. He was rotating his Pokémon out constantly. It's no wonder his levels didn't match up to Giovanni's.

Ran some new calcs.
Level 34 Jolteon takes 57 damage max from level 100 Rhyhorn's Tbolt and has 119 health, always surviving a crit.
BUT WAIT! Jolteon learns Double Kick at level 30, which it knew. I guess Red fought a level 100 Rhyhorn and failed to give his Jolteon the modicum of EXP (about 10,000 since it's in the Medium EXP group, or 2 minutes grindan) required to get his Jolteon to the always-survive range.

In anime like this, it is quite common for the Big Boss to initially win the encounter, only for the protagonist to unlock some sort of hidden power last minate and use it to surprise and overwhelm the antagonist.

With Mega Evo's now in, this proved a perfect opportunity to do just that, with a small touch of plot armor to protect Megazard from still being curbstomped.

What's in the games are completely irrelevant. The fact is, Pokemon in the Pokemon world was established to have abilities. In-universe, the abilities didn't just magically appear out of nowhere, they've always been there, they just haven't been depicted in earlier games.

By your logic, shoes meant to run never existed in the Pokemon world before when Ruby/Sapphire took place.

I think you're thinking about pokemon moves such as the elemental punches. Although they're physical now, they used to be special in gen 1 simply because they were elemental. That's what mad alakazam op. Slowbro was op because amnesia raised all things special, not just special def.
