Even if we only get about seventy new Pokémon, it's not that radically smaller than earlier generations. In Gen IV, if you exclude the twenty nine evolutions/pre-evolutions from earlier generations, we only got seventy eight new Pokémon, in a sense. Megas can arguably be similar in that regard.
