You're just not use to it. Some of the voices are fine though. And at least they aren't pulling obnoxious edits like 4kids did.

But yeah, they should have just allowed the person in charge of hiring VA's to choose what he believed worked for each character. Instead we got "Try and impersonate several of the VA's that worked on the 4kids dub!", because that always fucking works. Just like it did with the Funidub for DBZ back in 98-2000.

It's not even that. The acting is objectively bad. The script is dry. The casting is horrendous (and the 4Kids contracts have had to expired by now, right? They could have easily planned to bring the old VAs who are still out there back). At least Funimation's DBZ dub is well-done, if different. I actually prefer it to the older one.

Yeah but TPCI is cheap as fuck. It's also been roughly 7 years since they started using the new VA's, which means an entire new generation of kids that grew up on it. They can't make revert the change after 7 years. That reminds me, the 'new' VA's have now been working on Pokemon for the same amount of time as 4kids had. What was it? 8 years of work from 4kids before TPCI took over?

Think you mistook what I meant. When 4kids started to do in-house VA's work beginning with the Ginyu Saga, they had directions that each of the new VA's were to try and replicate the Ocean Studio's VA's as much as possible. Some of this shit on well into the Android Saga, especially with Chris Sabat's characters such as Vegeta.

Don't get me wrong, Funimation is top tier now. Dragonball Kai had a great dub and it shows they improved a tremendous amount over the past decade.

It's dry PRECISELY because it's a direct translation. The dialogue just doesn't feel like it was written by a natural English speaker: it's like they made no attempt to properly localize it. 4Kids was a fucking ocean compared to the desert that is the TPCI dub. At least the characters spoke somewhat naturally, and the writers actually wrote some pretty funny jokes. Yes, there were some very BS instances where they censored or completely rewrote something (I was pretty shocked at some of the edits they made to the first and fifth movies), but at least there was some sense of soul or effort. TPCI just does the bare minimum in quality to get that TV broadcast time.

Ash also didn't bother to get any of his superior reserved Pokemon he kept at Prof. Oak. Rather just risk the entire tournament on his new Pokemon. All of which outside of the bird, never fully evolved. I'm sure infernape could have easily blasted through all 5 of his pokemon.

It probably won't be much better here if it's truly what they're driving down with Serena's character. This is a children's show, after all; they can't have romance dominating the main focal point of the show, which is to swindle as much of the audiences' parents' money with games and merchandise as they can.

Even with May/Drew and Kenny's thing for Dawn, it only dominated their interactions because they weren't always together every episode. This will probably work very similar to Ash/Misty if it happens, friends most of the time with a few hints here and there.

The writers don't care, I think it's obvious at this point that the writers will keep swapping the same girls personalities, of course they're goal/appearance might be different...but basic qualities will be there:

Gen I(II): Misty, bitchy and hyper-critical

Gen IV: Dawn, sweet and caring newbie
Gen V: Iris, bitchy and hyper-critical

They probably didn't know whether or not the show would end with Ash and Misty still on the main cast or not, so they felt confident to play up on the pairing. I'd imagine the writers realized around the beginning of Johto that Misty wouldn't be on the show forever, so they started dialing down greatly on those types of interactions between them. As for the later Johto and Chronicles hints, maybe the writers were just being cautious and setting up for Misty to return just in case May was really unpopular. The ratings dropped, but not nearly enough to warrant fucking up merchandising and bringing back an old character unplanned, so Pokeshipping was sanctimoniously dropped afterwards.

I honestly don't care much about shipping, but if they don't at least reference that Misty moved on to Tracy or Brock or somebody, I'll be annoyed on the basis that it'll remain a loose end that they never tied up on the show ala GS ball.

The second movie is just Melody making fun of her and later she helps save her friend's life, don't really count as a romance subplot just Melody wanting to annoy her and Misty not wanting her friend to drown.

The Chronicles episode? Hardly a Pokeshipping scene, it implied Misty might like someone else but Ash was never implied. Heck considering how often Tracey comes to visit resulting in mini adventures with her and the Azuril he gave her one could argue Tracey is the one she likes.
