I might be extremely late but..

Would you guys say this is true or close to it? Or am I just completely wrong?

Its just after Nuzlocking with Charmander and losing to Brock, I started thinking maybe there was a deeper reason why people had so much pride in picking Charmander as a starter

I didn't say that. I'm just saying its harder to start out using one pokemon. Bulbasaur you could probably solo for the first 2 gyms. Squirtle could the first gym. Charmander can'd do any of them.

With Charmander and Squirtle, catching more pokemon and training them is pretty much a necessity for the first 3 gyms. While its much easier to get through without catching more with Bulbasaur

This was very true in Gen 1 when the only pokemon you could obtain before Brock were Birds, Rattata, Pikachu, and the bugs.

You HAD to win with either a charmeleon from facing the gym 90 times or a beedrill/butterfree.

In the remake, you can catch a mankey, nidoran, AND charmander learns metal claw so it doesn't really matter.

Couldn't you get a Mankey in Red in the original as well?
Though winning with Charmander in Red was easier than Fire Red since Onix or Geodude didn't have any rock moves. If you had Ember at a decent level, you were good to go.

This isn't true, though.
I regularly run blue/red - and when I choose charmander, I just stock up on potions and ember the geodude and onyx down. The chance of burn combined with their shitty special stat means the weakness of fire just makes the battle last a bit longer. They have no rock type attacks, so you just growl their attack down and use potions when things get scary.

You are correct, sir.
For those of us who played the original R/B, it was tough as hell. Nothing you could catch could help you against Brock, so it was either grinding, or relying on potions, or luck.
I think Origins captured this essence, because of the guy using a Metapod, it was both hilarious and very true.

You can't say the same for any of the remakes, because by then, you'd have a lot of other pokemon available, or moves, or you could trade, etcétera.

As another anon mentioned, in those games all you could catch was Caterpie/Weedle/Pikachu/Pidgey/Spearrow
All completely useless against rock pokemon.

It was fun though, very fun.

In Gen I you couldn't get mankey until a few routes after Brock. It was just using either a charmander and embering them 20 times or a bug.

In the remake, they put Mankey in that little side route going to Victory Road.

Why does everyone still just relies on the gym leader for the "difficulty" ?
Viridian forest is full of insect (hopefully Bulbasaur can't be poisoned, but still it's just tackle and leech seed all along) and once Brock is defeated you have to pass many pidgey, zubat and some rocket grunts and if I remember well even 2 or 3 magnemite and grimer before you get to misty

I don't know if Water or Fire is the best to go with in gen 2.

I know Water is easy mode in Gen 3. No Grass specialist, only two Pokemon in the whole league pack Grass STAB and they show up at the Elite Four (Cacturne and Ludicolo). There are two more that are packing Solar Beam, but it's Solar Beam, so whatever.

Picking Charmaner isn't particularly hard. All it means is either you brute force your way through Brock with items, or raise a Butterfree. Plus, Viridian Forest is a great place to grind with a Charmander and sucks ass with Bulbasaur.

Is Chikorita the worst starter to use?
Not counting Kanto:

Ultimately it depends on the game you're playing. For example, later games give Charmander Metal Claw, making it useable against Brock. Squirtle can also be viable against Misty if you evolve it into a Wartortle that knows bite.

Actually is quiite the contrary.

Bulbasaur is easy in first gyms, but hard in late stages of the game.

Charmander is hard in early game, but piece of cake in late game.

But saing on difficaulty, Late game > Early game.

So playing with Charmander actually it's easier than playing with Bulbasaur.

Anyone saying you couldn't get a Pokémon with a fighting move prior to Brock is a fool. You were able to catch Nidoran west of Viridian on Route 22. Get to level 12 and bam, double kick. Red had a Nidoran in the new Pokémon The Origins as well to kick Onix's ass.

Sure it's easier to take Bulbasaur and Squirtle because of the first gym, but after that it's just smooth sailing.

Never had any issues with Charmander, though. Just need to overtrain enough and everything is good.

I went through a poison monotype with emerald. Having only two Dustox against Roxanne was awful.

you could beat Brock with Squirtle, restart, pick Charmander, and beat him again in the time it would take you to grind Bulbasaur high enough to learn Vine Whip

if your argument about something being "easy" in an rpg is "it's easy if you grind" then you're doing it wrong

If you're underlevelled for a gym leader, then you're choosing to add challenge, but the game was designed with the expectation that having Vine Whip would be feasible.

Gym leaders are meant to be higher level than you, and your "training areas" make grinding before Brock slow as dirt.

Fact remains you can stomp him with the other two starters long before you can do it with Bulbasaur.

I tried Nuzlocking on Hard mode in Black 2. They actually upped the difficulty quite a bit. aside from nuzlocking, the game was still piss easy.

You could catch Nidoran with doublekick before Pewter city gym if you wanted. If you had Charmander, there was really no other option other than grinding on mobs in the square patch of grass outside town and having a huge rotation of shitty normals.

fuck i remember just raising a nidoran girl for the hell of it, finding out it learned doublekick, fucked brock up, fucked hikers up, fucked youngsters ratatas up, just in general wrecked shit and as around when it first evolved, i got a moon stone and evolved it again and the rest of my team was shit

I'd throw out pikachu and he'd get OHKO'd so i just kept using my lv.22 nidoqueen and went onto fuck the e4's shit hardcore

I didn't know about soloing being broken and just thought nidoqueens were broken shit

Generally whenever I played Yellow I'd either just grind until pikachu had quick attack or get a pidgeot and level it so that it can take Brock out.

I don't remember what emulator it was, but it was something that ran on Win95. It was pretty shitty, and some moves even managed to lag it down.

Brock was surprisingly easy with Charmander. He didn't have any rock moves and surprisingly low special stats, and so you could ember through them just fine. Plus, Pidgey's sand attack made that gym easy. Char was weak against Misty but you had access to Oddish/Belsprout at that point and really should be learning to catch appropriate Pokemon.

Bulbasaur took normal damage against poison, but was weak to psychic. Sabrina was easily the toughest gym leader, although by they you probably had your own psychic to fight her.

Squirtle did good through the first two gyms but was useless against Surge. If you complain about needing to catch other Pokemon to support Charmander, then good luck fighting Surge without Sandshrew/Diglett.

GB emulators have been out for a very long time friend. I remember a friend gave me Pokemon Silver on a floppy and I'd play it on my family computer all the time in middle school. He told me to avoid all Nintendo sites because they'd be able to see that I was using a fake copy of the game and they'd sue me. lel

Fuck every one of you who have ever uttered this drivel. The game is piss easy at the point where Bulbasaur is useful. The Elite Four and the Champion are the only difficult fights in the game regardless of which starter you picked and both of the other starters help massively with them. I mean, how the fuck is helping you defeat Brock some sort of massive positive? Brock can easily be beaten with a charmander, pidgey, butterfree, mankey or nidoran. You don't need any help beating Brock.You do need help taking down the elite four and the champ, since if you're not using legendaries then they can be genuinely hard battles,

Try using Venusaur on Loreli or Agatha and then tell me it's easy mode. And don't give me the "B-BUT YOU CAN USE OTHER POKEMON" shit, you all trained only your starter throughout the game.

the easiest way to do it is to use bulbasaur until you can get amnesia slowbro online which will beat the entire lategame for you by itself. send it out first, amnesia x3, heal, and one hit everything with surf or psychic. beats the elite 4 at level 45-50
