I don't think of Pokemon as a series of generations. Instead, I think of it as one whole game. When a new gen is added, I don't think of it as a replacement, I think of it as merely an addition. Rarely do I ever see a new Pokemon I don't like, but when I do, I don't get angry, because after all, we still have all the other Pokemon, don't we?
Think of it this way: If someone completely new to the entire franchise and oblivious to everything saw the entire list of Pokemon, he wouldn't sort them into categories, he would think of them as a collective group. And that's how I think of them.
A lot of the mentality here ("new gen sucks, new starters suck, etc.") seems to be that each new generation is a "replacement" of the old one. I just think of it as an additional new set of pokemon to catch and an additional new region to explore. That's a good thing, right?
