I understand the cause, but I just don't get it. I've been carrying my Pikachu 3ds since day one in my pocket, and not a sign of a scratch has appeared. Maybe the rubber pads wear down over time or something and cause the screen to touch the bottom, but as of right now, my screen doesn't.

Looking at my XL, it would be physically impossible for the bottom bezel to scratch the top screen.

The rubber nubs prevent the bottom section from ever coming into contact with the top.
XL users can look for themselves by putting it up to a light source and looking at it directly from the side.

This is an original 3DS issue only unless people somehow have a mutant XL.

I thought the same. The XL buffer is bigger than the originals buffer but the buffer is only on the ends. Looking closely, you'll see that the screen dips closer to the bottom half the closer you get to the hinges. This is where the scratches begin.

It IS possible that newer models don't scratch. My theory is that some of the "new" ones are just 'old' shells reskinned into limited editions

Just checked my Y-3DS XL. It's impossible as well. This did affect my regular 3DS (first edition) one, and had screen protectors from the beginning anyway. Just left a mark that I can rub away with a cloth, but would have damaged the screen.

I still want screen protectors for my new one, but have been getting complaints of some users with them on XL's that it affects 3D n such. Also have friends with XL's for awhile with no problems with screens w/o using them.

Also, the clear protectors for the outside are shit too. They scratch your system/peel paint.

Starts as small dots that wipe away at first but gradually get deeper with more use

you can also keep a chamois between the screens to prevent this

From my own experience my XL hasn't suffered scratches like that, and I'm pretty sure the screens dont touch. But just in case I've kept a microfiber cloth in between the screens while closed.

It's also handy to have at all times to wipe away any smudges.

Got my first 3DS (XL) last week. After reading a ton of reviews on various screen protectors, I decided on the Hori. There are a ton of Walmarts, Best Buys, Targets, Gamestops etc in my town... fucking NONE of them had it. reason is that some screen protectors affect the 3D / damage the screen themselves. Gamestop doesn't like to keep them instock cause they are not made by Nintendo, but will have them come holiday season (idk why then, but that's what they said)

1. They can cause hardware issues (touchscreen doesn't work right, 3D looks weird)
2. They are difficult to put perfectly on.
3. They're unnecessary as long as you put a cloth between the two screens.

Those are my own reasons for not using screen protectors, and a $2 microfiber cloth is cheaper than most screen protectors.

There's a good few milometers between the top and bottom screens, and even lightly pressing the two halves together they do not make contact.

The only way I can ever see this happening would be if there was a significant amount of pressure applied, or if the nubs wore down.

Putting it in a pocket and then sitting, or having it in a laptop bag through an airport are the only cases I can see this even possibly occurring, and even then it's doubtful.

This is a relatively new XL, but it is still a Blue.

Can anyone with this problem take a picture of the gap between the screens from the side?
Preferably with some lighter background.
Would help to determine how this occurs.

If it's dust under the protector, the way you remove it is carefully lift the corner of the protector closest to the problem, stick a piece of scotch tape to where the shit is, and peel the tape back off again. The shit will stick to the tape. Then lay the protector back down and rub it to reattach it.

My own experiences is proof of that, my DS phat, DS lite, 3DS, and 3DS XL are not scratched to hell. Only my phat has minor scratches and that's after 6 years of use, by that point why even care?

Mine does exactly the same thing, but it most definitely has little dots that are scratches in the screen. No idea how that happens.

I figured it wouldn't happen so long as I didn't put any pressure on it, like putting it in my pocket or something, but it still happened.

3DS leaving vertical marks on the top screen exactly where the plastic frame for the bottom screen is located is a widely known issue. It's a flaw with the hardware.

Don't really need a protector for the bottom screen though, just don't rub rocks on it.

A neat trick I learned to prevent this, you can take the little rubber stoppers off the bottom of your xbox 360 if you have one (non elite models only, I believe) they come off easy and leave barely any residue, and is easy to clean up. Just stick them on the top of your 3DS and it keeps your screen from touching the bottom screen when you close it. Wallah

the bottom screen edges rub microscopic dust into the screen. Closer to the hinges, the screens are much closer. this is why the scratching usually starts at the bottom.

the buffers are made of rubber so ANY pressure will press the screens together. that's all it takes to get dust ground in.

Unless you wipe down your screen every time you are about to close it(despite not touching it), you will get these scratches.

Personally, I find I can't enjoy my devices fully until there is some kind of blemish.
I'm always preoccupied to some degree trying not to scratch or damage it.

My PSP somehow has light surface scratches on the screen just form me cleaning it over time, but since I can't see them when a game is on I really don't give a shit.

I've got a launch 3DS and started to notice some very small marks then someone over at the 3DS generals on /vg/ suggested to place the black cloth that comes with it between the screens.

If you're destroying your screens by using a stylus, you are using the stylus WAY too hard. Normal, non-retarded people can use a stylus for years and come away with minimal (if any) scratches. My DS Phat has only a few and they're minor and I've had it since 2005. My XL is going perfectly.

When you're paranoid about every little fault you diminish your enjoyment of it.

Since it's a clamshell, the chances of you getting anything that will actually be visible during gameplay are next to nil.
How often do you plan on looking at the screen while it's turned off?
Kinda defeats the purpose of a handheld console don't you think?

BTW, if you have any dust on the microfiber cloth, it just makes it more likely to scratch it further since there will be additional pressure. (Even though I'm not sure how your bottom screen makes contact with the top anyway.)

Why don't you try this if you're really concerned:
Remove the stock rubber stopper nubs carefully.
Cut out new nubs of the same size from a piece of rubber that is slightly taller.
Re-apply the new nubs and keep the old ones if you ever need them.

You could just add some thin rubber pads on either side as well that use mild adhesive if you don't want to do an actual mod.

Are you people standing on your XLs or something? Mine doesn't scratch at all. There are stoppers on the top screen that prevent it from closing all the way. The only way you could get the top screen to touch anything on the bottom is if you're putting so much pressure on it that it just bends the top screen.
