So I haven't played a Pokemon game since the GBC Pokemon Gold back in the day. But since I got a 3DS recently I got quite hyped about getting X/Y, so If you guys won't mind, could you answer this returnee questions.

1. How does exactly the Torchic event works? Do I need to go to an actual participating real store for some sort of event or I just need to access the internet during the event period with my 3DS.

2. Anything I should be aware that changed during this long hiatus of mine? I know they introduced 2 pokemons per team battles but besides that I have no idea. New gameplay mechanics? new ways to move around besides bike and flying? actual plot and character development in the games?

I am quite hyped for this to to be honest, specially since have every other generation since II to discover too discover too.
