Gen I had the best designs. They're not all great, but as a whole they're better than latter generations. Many of the pokémon people look back on to criticize in Gen I for being as unoriginal as in later generations don't take into account that they were original back then. Diglett and Magnemite evolving into multiple versions was new back then, when it's still happening in gens V and VI it's old.

I'm a minor genwunner but I also like the overall designs from II, IV and VI (sans the starters). III and V were balls.

when we say gen 1 had the best designs, we mean ON AVERAGE. every fucking generation has some kind of joke design (unown? castform? lickylicky? stunfisk? mega charizard x?) but on average gen 1 is still the best.

I honestly think the idea of pokemon back in gen 1 was completely different than now. They were simply designed with (mostly) real animals in mind. Around gen 3 the style and design changes to resemble monsters a little more, and animals with nature powers a little less. Neither is better, its just basic style evolution.

But in all honesty, these gen wars are fucking stupid. In my opinion it goes like this:
Gen 1 - amazing
Gen 2 -.... also amazing
Gen 3 - Not as good as 1 and 2 but still pretty damn good
Gen 4 - The weakest yet, but it was still enjoyable.
Gen 5 - Decent
and Gen 6 is looking like a good return to form, despite one or two shit-tier designs
