Can someone inform me of the basics of smog on? I read through their tiers and still don't really get it. I really want to get back in to battling competitively, haven't really played since the G/S/C and R/S/E days.

So ubers are basically not to be used in competitive battling? Then what's the "never-used" tier? thanks

The way they have it structured is that you can use pokes in a particular tier in battles of that tier and above, but not below that tier.
ex. Poke is in Overused, so you can use it in Overused and Ubers battles, but not in Underused or below.
I'm not sure how borderline pokes work though.

The tiers are also somewhat based on usage statistics, hence weird names like Overused, Underused, and Neverused

Basically they start with just one tier where every Pokemon is fine to use and everything deemed too overpowered for it goes up into Ubers.

Then the most used ~50 Pokemon Pokemon are deemed OU and everything else becomes UU. Then the most used ~50 Pokemon in UU are called UU and everything else is thrown into RU which does the same process and everything else goes into NU.

Borderline is kind of a special ruleset, almost.

BL is basically "really good for NU, but not that great for OU"

I think a lot of people who play NU limit how many BLs you're allowed.

Tiers are basically based in level of usage, which relates to how good a pokemon generally does once you account for prevalent strategies and what's banned.

If you're fighting ubers, you can use anything.

If you're fighitng OU you can use any pokemon not in ubers.

So on and so forth.

Banlist is what you can't do. Everything else is fair game.

This. It's a very weird system that is far more based on levels of use than on, say, the pokemon's actual viability.

It's why Scrafty was considered OU for so long. It wasn't necessarily good (and is honestly kind of mediocre), it was just used a lot.

What really surprises me with Smogon is banning really simple moves like Double Team.

Aren't you vulnerable to moves like Swift and Aerial Ace anyway?

I always think that it's a shitty idea too, until I play through the game and end up fighting some faggot with a Pikachu using Double Team and JUST MY LUCK YOU MISS EVEN WITH THE FIRST ONE

Plus the good old Gen 1 days where you had Double Team, Amnesia, Psychic, and Recover on a Mewtwo and just stacked buffs for like 9 turns and just instagibbed everything, even if it resisted you.
