Just to remind everyone to maybe taper down the aggression a bit, a lot of the leaks have said "around 70". That could be 67, yes, or it could be about 80-some, or even 90-some. There are too many conflicting reports and it's too early to tell anything for sure (not to mention we haven't seen the national dex yet, and as OP mentioned there are Pokemon we know exist yet haven't seen yet).

What *doesn't* seem to be in question anymore (at least as far as we can tell) is that, regardless of exact number, this gen is looking to have the smallest amount of new Pokemon in the series. This shouldn't be particularly surprising when you take into account there around 50 Mega Evolutions which all demanded their own designs and models.

So the enduring question is: did Gamefreak sacrifice new Pokemon for Mega Pokemon? If so, was this a worthwhile sacrifice? I'm interested to see how people react.

Yes, the presumed leaker who gave away this information did only show off stuff we already knew about at first - but then went on to describe Chesnaught and Delphox with a nice amount of accuracy (saying the former looked like an armored Machoke with a hunchback and the latter looking identical to Braixen but with a dress). I may be wrong, but if memory serves correct this was the first indication we ever had of their final evolutions and thus stands to legitimize the presumed leaker's credibility.

There's no bet on a trio, leaker said there was only the Kanto birds. Nitx is a fake, and not every pokemon who looks like it has a pre-evo does, Kotaku is untrustworthy, so is Experto. A pixie would bring it up to 71 which isn't a big difference since the leaker said 'about' 70.

This is somewhat where I stand, but can't help but feel it would have been better to give permanent evos to Pokemon like, say, Absol and Mawile. I think mega evolution is an interesting concept and was okay with it as its own thing, but at the expense of actual evolution and perhaps even new Pokemon that could have new and interesting typing combinations? Maybe not so much.

Also megaphorms bring more to battle than just a plain evo wich would make teams more broken unlike with megas wich are one for each team.
There's a bunch of interesting combinations already, i dont know what combinations people expect that can be called interesting, water/fire for example would need a very special animal design to work. And some megas already add interesting types and new abilities.

The entire selling point of this gen is that everything else and been completely reworked from 3D to gameplay. The game is about seeing you old and beloved Pokemon is new glorious 3D.
