There are countless Pokémon with BSTs too low or movesets too small to use in competitive play; and there are many others whom I'd like to use in single player some time, but haven't gotten a chance to because that generation had too many other alternatives to use them all.
There are still new bros to discover among what we already have, and there is still much unused potential. If Nintendo focused on that for another generation, while adding new Mega Evolutions, that would keep me perfectly entertained without any need for another few hundred Pokémon, half of which would never be used or look ridiculous anyway.
