So I completely skipped over both Gen 2 and Gen 5. Am I missing out on an experience or should I just go ahead and play X on day one?

I never played the original gold/siver/platinum or the DS remakes. I also didn't play Black and White or Black and White 2.

Black/White is a good game with, IMO, a rather neat story for a Pokemon game. Black/White 2 is ok, but it's anticlimactic in comparison.

It's getting pretty close to release day, but I would pick up HeartGold/SoulSilver at some point, some of the bestgames in the series there, I'd say a must-play.

I liked the B/W games, but they're kinda skippable. I see it as an in-between generation for the end of the DS's life cycle. It's an experiment with a lot of minor features, but that makes it far to packed with stuff you'll never use. The Pokemon are alright, but hey, why discover the good ones you missed in X/Y? That said, B2/W2 has some of the best presentation of any Pokemon game and is generally an improvement over B1/W1.

They're worth going back to if you get around to it, but HG/SS should be a priority.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you the story in B/W and B2/W2 was good -- they're fucking illiterate six year olds. They were passable, nothing more or less.

HG and SS were some of the best Pokemon games made. I really enjoyed B&W too, but don't even bother with the sequels. I finished my Black and White Pokedex, which is why I didn't like Black and White 2. All the wild Pokemon I came across, I already had on other versions so it made it feel pointless. I don't play these games for the story. I play them to CATCH EM ALL.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver are (in my opinion) the best Pokemon games so far. I'd definitely recommend them. I'd also give gen 5 a go. B/W have a decent story and B2/W2 are better than B/W in most aspects (except the story). If you have a flashcart/emulator, I recommend giving them all a go. Otherwise just try out HG/SS. It has the best user-interface and it follows on the story from gen 1 (which I assume you've played). It's probably the best game to reintroduce yourself to the series.
