The land masses can be connect. Kalos-Kanto-Johto.

It does look like a sideways japan and would explain why we see Mewtwo and the legendary birds.

Also by fitting these two pictures together seems to show something particular.

Also if megas are exclusive to Kalos, then it looks like Red was near enough to activate it with his Charizard.
