I'm trying to stay away from here due to spoilers, but I couldn't stop myself from watching The Origin because I figured it's retelling R/B/Y, it couldn't be anything like that. I may or may not be latefagging on this, couldn't find any threads on catalog, but can we get a discussion about this? The first episode was absolutely fucking beautiful. It showed Red developing as a character, it brought back the nostalgia of going out and catching every little shit you could find, not knowing what type advantages and weaknesses are, they even fixed the part from the games where you beat Gary/Green/Blue every single time you encountered him, having him lose once and having Red not fight him again until the Elite 4. It even did the thing where it sort of explains how the gym leaders get progressively stronger because they have different sets of Pokemon to use depending on how strong the opponent is. What I didn't like was everything after the first episode. I mean, yeah, the fight scenes were pretty great (They could've had a lot more variety with the movesets, not had Rhyhorn knock out jolteon with a fucking electric move, etc), but it felt very rushed. Sylph Co would've been an amazing thing to animate with all the shit that happened there. Red could've gotten his Hitmonlee, the thing that basically singlehandedly beat Rhyhorn, encountered the Snorlax roadblock, started the Giovanni characterization so he actually has reason to show him being hated, gotten the Sylph Scope to get the Gengar he used against Mewtwo, even shown off a gym battle against Sabrina. Pokemon Tower did not need to take nearly that long. Don't even get me started on the mewtwo ending thing. But otherwise, I thought it was pretty great. Like, a solid 9/10 on so many fronts, ultimately suffering from not being a full series while Ash gets his 16th season or so.

I'd also like to pick a bit at how the Elite 4 got almost no exposure, the legendaries were just sort of "oh, I caught those now". And Giovanni seemed like too much of a dick when being introduced. He's supposed to be a professional, leader of Team Rocket and all that. He just seems like a thug rather than a high level mafia leader who is also the strongest of the Gym Leaders. And why the fuck didn't he use Nidoking? The whole fucking point of Team Rocket members getting poison types and him being Ground leader is for fucking Ground/Poison Nidoking, fuck. He could've been like this, like Gus from Breaking Bad or something. Maybe it's just the subs I was watching, but he seemed like the type to be the one who told Jessie and James to start calling Ash a twerp.

Like the whole thing in the first episode was him advancing. I can agree that after that first episode he was 2D and boring where it was just sort of him winning at everything, but within that first 30 minutes, he was excited as fuck going on an adventure catching things left and right, that blood curdling scream from his Charmander showed him and us that a Pokemon adventure isn't much of a joke at all, the Brock battle he won shows him advancing in both knowledge and overcoming his flaws to stop taking everything so lightly.
He's not exactly the deepest guy around or anything, but he really does grow up in that first episode.

You know what I didn't like about Origins? That they KIND OF retconned gen VI into it, but not all the way. I thought Mr. Fuji giving Red the mega-stones was great. I can see that happening. Hell, even Charizard's evolution into Mega Charizard X was pretty damn awesome during the Mewtwo fight. No, what bothered me was that Professor Oak mentions the Kalos region, and then towards the end, is talking with Red about how there are only 150 Pokemon. If Professor Oak knew about the Kalos Region, there is absolutely no way he only thought that there were 150 Pokemon. Either DON'T MENTION KALOS, or acknowledge the existence of the other 650 Pokemon. No half-measures, Pokemon. You can't do that.
