Especially in a game where trading is emphasised. You have to have more Pokemon in a main series game, whereas in Mystery Dungeon it doesn't matter very much.

GTL had 144 pokemon, entirely that was all.
Gen 6 has at least 200 pokemon confirmed already, probably around 400, you're comparing total pokemon to newly introduced pokemon god damn

That being said, I never even found the low pokemon count in Gates to be that much of an issue for me. The way Explorers was set up, it made anyone who is not the two main characters complete dead-weight due to long segments of just the two main characters, with gummis and no levelling while at base (and the core gameplay made it not worth grinding levels and gummis for hours on end).

Gates mostly fixed those issues for me so I found myself using a far greater variety, even if there were far less pokemon available.

Some ideas may sound bad on paper, but in practice, might not be nearly as bad as it would seem
