Looking back, does anyone else feel like Gen 5 is the weakest so far? I just feel that many of the poke designs were subpar and that there weren't enough changes from Gen 4.

Gen 5 had some pretty good designs I think and was definitely a big step up from 4, which I'd say was the all around weakest Gen.

Gen 2 had the worst designs in my opinion, but had some great starters and probably the best story/post-game of the lot.

I could only manage one play through, the pokemon were just so lacklustre and boring

I didn't even finish BW2 even though I know it's meant to be better.

Just generally boring and disappointing- I love Pokemon but thie was definitely my least favourite gen ever.

don't kid yourself- Gen V was an attempt to redefine the Pokemon series. That's why they made so many new Pokemon, gave it a tryhard story and tried to distance themselves from previous gens as hard as possible.

thankfully GF have learnt their lessons now and we can move on.

It's possible, I probably don't remember most of them because Gen 5 was by far the one I enjoyed/played the least out of every one so far. At least it has me extremely excited for how they're shaking things up with X/Y.

In terms of designs? Nope. I can see why some people may prefer 1, 2, or 3, but no way is it even close to being as bad as 4 or 6. Personally it's my favorite for managing to to integrate the most visual gags in the Pokemon than any other generation.

I hate to say this but Pokemon suffers from franchise fatigue, which started in DPPt.
And now with the whole mega evolution deal, it feels like it has finally jumped the shark.
Pokemon will keep selling like hot cakes for many years to come, but each new generation will keep getting worse and worse receptions.

Just to clarify i would've been perfectly happy with Black and White being the 3DS gen assuming of course it used the 3D sprites and had most of X and y's features.

Black and White 2 just compounded the unecessaryness of these games.

I'm glad someone else sees Megaevolutions for the tired, pandering, insidious influence they are. It's just game freak trying to zap some old Pokemon into new life and make them dance to amuse the old fans.

Gen V wasn't perfect but I appreciate it tried to do something different and push the series forward. It made mistakes but it's better then rehashing and fanservice which will be met with seal-like applause from the mindless drones but damages the series in the long run.

I know that Gen 5 has a bit of filler, like the monkeys, but the coolest designs were really cool. Scolipede, Leavanny, Lilligant, Krookodile, Scrafty, Galvantula, Bisharp, Braviary, Darmanitan and Cinccino are all really good in-game.

That being said, BW2 was totally unnecessary. It just wasn't an interesting enough region for me to want to play through twice consecutively. They should have rolled the plot of BW2 into BW1 and then should have just made Pokemon Grey. And then Ruby and Sapphire remakes.

I feel really let down that in Heart Gold and White the bottom screen doesn't even come close to as useful as it was in Platinum for me.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver had a far superior touchscreen. You rarely used the Poketch in Platinum (I always just left mine on the team-viewer app) and cycling through them was annoying. HG/SS had a brilliant interface that encouraged the player to use the touchscreen without forcing them to use it. And that second registerable item was pretty handy (I always kept mine as the itemfinder).

Gen 5 was hit and miss across the board. While Gen 4 was marred by technical issues that were ultimately hashed out, Gen 5 had foundational problems in things like N, the region, treatment of the E4, etc...

In an Iwata Asks session Masuda and Sugimori said it was extremely hard for them to make Gen 5 distinct from Gen 4. Don't be surprised when people call it Gen 4.5

I would rank the gens 1>2>5>3>4>6

Diamond and Pearl were definitely the weakest games, but they were still fun. There has been no bad pokemon game, just some better than others.

I have not noticed this at all. If anything everyone is shitting on Gen4 more than ever and pointing out that Gen6 is making many of the same mistakes.

It was also not as useful as the Poketch. Goddamn that thing was convenient. Don't remember a type combo's attributes? Poketch. Want to check your berry progress? Poketch. Want to hatch eggs and know when they're ready? Poketch. Want to check your team's health at a glance? Poketch. Want to chain for shinies? Poketch. Want to hunt down roamers easily? Poketch.

For everyone one of those there's:

Infernape, Torterra, Empoleon, Luxray, Lucario, Hippowdon, Garchomp, Toxicroak, Gastrodon, etc...

The design thing is subjective, but the region was not swamped by a glut of shit pokemon by any stretch of the imagination.

Even the regional rodent (Bidoof) is good as both an HM slave and fighter (Simple Bibarel is scary).

Platinum is better than HGSS, BW1 and 2, and probably XY.

They need to bring back the Vs Seeker (makes all those trainers lying around useful), Pokeradar (increases # of pokemon you can find in the wild + lets you get your own shinies), Poketch (useful as hell).

my memories of gen 4 are of a bright, colourful region with utterly forgettable gym leaders and elite 4 but decent Pokemon and an altogether sleek experience.

gen 5 was crowded, pseudo-urban and cluttered. It tried to be fresh and new and had hit-and-miss success with it.

A lot of people were hyped then it died once a ton of the new pokemon were leaked.
It's like all the good pokemon came out at once and the shitty ones came right after and it killed the anticipation for a lot of people. Especially the startsers

I've got a theory on pokemon games - the odd numbered gens are standalone base games while the even numbered gens are more like expansion packs or compilation games. I've also found that people tend to gravitate towards one or the other - most people who express a strong preference for 5 also really like 3, while most people who express a strong preference for 4 also really like 2, and vice versa.

I'm betting that the current batch of 6 haters probably for the most part really liked 3 and 5, and the current batch of 6 defenders probably really liked 2 and 4. Its not about how old you are or where in the game's cycle everyone is - I think preference literally comes down to whether you like the "standalone" style odd gens or the "expansion" style even gens. That being said, for the people who started playing at the very beginning, I bet there is a strong correlation between attitudes towards the first two gens and current "standalone" vs "expansion" preference.

What do you think, /vp/?

I started with Gen I, didn't even beat the Elite Four in Gen II, loved (and love) Gen III, Platinum was so dull I stopped playing Pokémon for years, then I bought HeartGold a few months ago and it got me back into Pokémon. Now I'm enjoying White 2, though not as much as previous games. Looking forward to X/Y.
That's some anecdotal evidence to begin with. Anyone else?
