I'm with you actually. With one or two exceptions I'm actually very fond of all the new pokemon we've seen (and those one or two others I'm simply indifferent to, rather than actively hating them), and I've been wanting a way to customize the player character since gen 2. I like the style the game is presented in, I find the graphical style charming even if it's not quite pushing the limits of the system, and I don't use the 3D effect so not having it in the overworld doesn't bother me one bit.
I also love that they filled in the game with a ton of older pokemon, as that was my biggest problem with gen 4/5, the lack of being able to obtain some of my classic faves. Some people call it filler, but I look at it as an improvement. Can't speak for the story as I haven't played it yet, but I'm hopeful that it'll be at least mildly entertaining. I'm also expecting that if it isn't exactly fantastic it'll still be enjoyable, and when Z is released it will step up the game a bit and make it even more awesome.
And as a final point I'd like to make, please remember what kind of technology we're working with these days. If the game turns out to not have a huge postgame, GF can always release updates/expansions. The 3DS can handle it. They've been undertaking a huge thing in preparing the game for a simultaneous world-wide release. It's entirely possible that they have more planned, but to keep the game from coming out next year sometime they decided to get the game ready to go and then be able to focus on said expansions/the special version. I'm gonna be keeping my ear to the ground a few months from now for any rumblings of updates. I think it'd be incredibly awesome if they did regional adventure packs allowing you to visit other regions and challenge the leaders for more badges/find some more classic pokemon. I for one would love to see what Kanto and Johto look like after a couple of decades in-game.
