Aegislash or its ability name?

It goes to defense form when using a defensive move, such as Kings Shield.
It goes to attack form when using an offensive move, such as Iron Head.

So no, doesn't need a specific move or to be attacked, but it changes forms before it uses either an offensive or defensive move.

Use attack move, changes to attack form.

I'm more concerned about what is switched.
That smogon thread said Defense and SDefense were reversed with Attack and SAttack, but somebody here mentioned SDefense switched with speed.

Yeah One of the leakers used a Boosting move in blade forme.

You start in Shield form, and Attack to go into blade forme, Kings Shield is the only way to go back

How about Protect, or moves of that manner? Just because someone used a Boosting move and it didn't shift doesn't mean King's Shield is the only way. Swords Dance isn't exactly a defensive move, you know.

And I'm sure it can learn Protect. Plenty of things can, and a Poke with "Aegis" in its name not learning the save-all blocking move would be a little silly.

I mean, I can see it going either way. It just seems strange for it to get a move that's objectively better than protect.

The fact that King's Shield drops the Atk stat and not the Sp. Atk stat leads me to suspect that it'll only block physical / direct contact moves (yes, those aren't the same) similar to how Chesnaught's Spiny Shield works.

But hey, if King's Shield blocks anything that'll be great because I'm putting an Aegislash on my team ASAP anyways.

Not the best analogy coming but.

If you strike a shield with a sword you'll be open to a counter attack from rebound.

If you shoot a shield there is no direct consequence.
